How Do Ankle Sprains Happen?

Ankle sprains generally happen due to over-stretched ligaments on the outside of the ankle. The ligaments connect the bones and joints to each other and provide stability and balance to the body. Common causes of ankle sprains can consist of suddenly twisting the ankle from unexpectedly stepping off a curb or walking on uneven surfaces. Existing foot injuries may also lead to a sprained ankle, or it may happen to patients born with weak ankles. People can experience symptoms such as swelling and bruising, and walking can be difficult. A diagnosis is often performed that can rule out a broken ankle. Once the sprained ankle is confirmed, treatment can begin. This generally consists of refraining from bearing weight on it for several weeks, in addition to wearing an elastic wrap that can provide stability. If you have sprained your ankle, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can guide you toward the correct treatment method.

Although ankle sprains are common, they aren’t always minor injuries. If you need your ankle injury looked at, contact Dr. Sunny Sajjad, DPM, MS, DABPM from Virginia Run Foot & Ankle . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

  • Bruising/Swelling
  • Ankle area is tender to touch
  • In severe cases, may hear/feel something tear
  • Skin discoloration

  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

In many cases, the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevate) is used to treat ankle sprains. However, you should see a podiatrist to see which treatment option would work best with your injury. In severe cases, surgery may be required.

It is important to ask your doctor about rehab options after you receive treatment for your injury. Stretching, strength training, and balance exercises may help the ankle heal while also preventing further injury.

Cutting an Ingrown Toenail

Ingrown toenails are certainly no fun. When the side of a toenail grows into the skin, and the skin essentially grows over the nail, irritation can ensue. Ingrown toenails are also associated with redness of the skin. If you are someone that is living with an ingrown toenail, you may consider visiting a podiatrist to get the toenail cut. It is important to note that removing the ingrown toenail is typically a remedy that is saved for more severe cases. If a medical professional cuts the nail, they normally use the correct method of cutting the nail straight across using nail clippers. They also may use tweezers or other tools to get the nail to grow in the proper direction. However, the nature of trimming the toenails will vary from case to case, as each ingrown toenail is unique. If you are living with an ingrown toenail, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who can determine the best way to cut your toenails.

Ingrown toenails can become painful if they are not treated properly. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact Dr. Sunny Sajjad, DPM, MS, DABPM of Virginia Run Foot & Ankle . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail grows sideways into the bed of the nail, causing pain, swelling, and possibly infection.

Causes

  • Bacterial infections
  • Improper nail cutting such as cutting it too short or not straight across
  • Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, which causes the nail to grow back irregularly
  • Ill-fitting shoes that bunch the toes too close together
  • Genetic predisposition

Prevention

Because ingrown toenails are not something found outside of shoe-wearing cultures, going barefoot as often as possible will decrease the likeliness of developing ingrown toenails. Wearing proper fitting shoes and using proper cutting techniques will also help decrease your risk of developing ingrown toenails.

Treatment

Ingrown toenails are a very treatable foot condition. In minor cases, soaking the affected area in salt or antibacterial soaps will not only help with the ingrown nail itself, but also help prevent any infections from occurring. In more severe cases, surgery is an option. In either case, speaking to your podiatrist about this condition will help you get a better understanding of specific treatment options that are right for you.

The Four Points of the Feet In Yoga

Stretching the feet can be a critical way for a person to increase mobility and flexibility in each foot. One way in which a person might go about stretching the feet is by performing certain yoga stretches. The yoga tradition approaches foot stretches by essentially conceiving the feet as having four “points.” There are two points in the ball of the foot, one at the big toe and one at the pinky toe. And then there are also two points on the heel of the foot, one on either side of the heel. By identifying the feet as containing four different points, a person performing yoga stretches the feet in an even and balanced manner. If you are someone that is looking to stretch their feet by using yoga methods, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist for more information.

Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with Dr. Sunny Sajjad, DPM, MS, DABPM from Virginia Run Foot & Ankle . Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Stretching the Feet

Being the backbone of the body, the feet carry your entire weight and can easily become overexerted, causing cramps and pain. As with any body part, stretching your feet can serve many benefits. From increasing flexibility to even providing some pain relief, be sure to give your feet a stretch from time to time. This is especially important for athletes or anyone performing aerobic exercises, but anyone experiencing foot pain or is on their feet constantly should also engage in this practice.

Great ways to stretch your feet:

  • Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
  • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle

Individuals who tend to their feet by regular stretching every day should be able to minimize foot pain and prevent new problems from arising.
